Having finished the Soundfest Festival with GoPro Im now back in Mui ne and decided to put my effort into creating timelapse with the Hero 2. Mui ne offers such a good amount of places to shoot and now every Tuesday I will post a new timelapse from the places and people I met  during the week. The first one concentrates on a typical day here strarting at dawn with the fishing boats coming in and unloading their catch and finishes with the setting of the sun over the bay.

Hope you enjoy......

Having just got back from Oz I get a phone call asking if im happy to help out at Soundfest with GoPro, so 5hrs travelling back to Saigon and Im now shooting daily updates of the arena, stage and general stuff to edit and post to build up the event. Take a look at the timelapse and a teaser of where we have stuck GoPro cameras for some unique and weird angles from guitars to rock drummers heads to the mic itself....

This episode of the Kingdom features one epic backcountry run from the top of the Jackson Hole Tram on a sunny pow day in March 2012. Kinger hits up the classic lines of Pucker Face, No Name Face and the Womb, all in one big lap. Shot entirely on GoPro cameras. Enjoy!

Here is a great vid I came across showing the differences between the GoPro Hero and Hero 2.  It gives a great rundown of the features and pits them against each other resulting in an easy to see winner.
Comparison movie of image quality from GoPro HD HERO and HD HERO2 cameras. Shot in the 3D HERO System, the horizontal parallax = 3.5 cm (1.37"). Original untouched pictures, absolutely no color grading or any quality corrections. Although the same angle of view, the cameras have a slightly different field of view. Both cameras have their advantages and disadvantages that you will find in the film. To obtain the best personal review, I recommend to download this movie and watch it in full quality.

my HERO2 pros:
- A clear improvement in image quality, more detailed, sharper image
- Improved management of white balance (movies are noticeably warmer color which is good for non-post-production-users)
- New video modes (and badass 120fps)
- Tons of useful new features
- Quality in low light doesn't makes your ass explode, but it is very useful
- almost excellent hardware build quality

cons:
- Sometimes the image corners are little bit burned
- Sometimes has a tendency to little bit over exposure movies
- The camera itself seriously heats up (but not overheat!) after several minutes of recording
- 90° Narrow mode is damned noisy

Shot on cams:
GoPro HD HERO - firmware 01.01.54
GoPro HD HERO2 - firmware HD2.08.12.50

Its not often I get excited but this discovery has had me blowing my techy beans all over the place. There is available a 4.2mm Lens that reduces the distortion created by the normal Gopro lens and sounds fairly easy to change and cost next to nothing to boot. The lens can apparently be used in all shooting modes and can still be interchanged with the original lens although after fitting the new lens the Gopro will not fit into the waterproof case. Im sure the lens can be changed to fit this though.

To change the lens the Gopro needs to be opened up, the original lens removed by unscrewing and the new lens screwed in and the focus set to between 5m and 10m. I have ordered one of these lenses and will post a small tutorial on how to change over.

Some numbers and stuff.....
  • Focal length: 4.2mm
  • F number: 2.8
  • Distortion: -4%
  • Diagonal view angle: 78 ° and 60 ° at 720p at 1080p
  • Thread: M12x0.5
  • Vapor-deposited IR block filter at 650nm

The lenses are made by a firm called Sunex http://www.optics-online.com/default.asp and can be purchased through these guys in Germany, (who I bought mine from). http://www.globe-flight.de/GoPro-Wechselobjektiv-42mm-78-60-mit-IR-Filter

Take a look at the film they produced flying an RC Octokopter fitted with a Gopro and the new lens.

I have been toying with the idea of designing a mounting system to attach a GoPro to an octocopter and in my research came across this footage by Wobby on Vimeo. Amazing results from such a small camera. Hope you enjoy.

Hey people, I tripped over these guys while flitting around Vimeo today and felt the need to share what their up to. I have made a few of these mounts myself for use with GoPro's but I think these guys have nailed it. The mounts are robust and affordable and as can be seen from this footage, it gives a great perspective of snowboarding.

Felt the need to post some up to date tips and tricks as its been a while since I updated the tech side of things. Found a great little vid on how to change your GoPro lens from the fisheye to the flat underwater lens.  Hope it helps some of you guys out and underneath it is a little timelapse vid from the same guys using an interesting egg timer type mount.
Has a rock ever jumped up and hit your GoPro camera right in the lens? Have you ever accidentally keyed your camera?

In this video, the camarush.com team takes you through step-by-step instructions on how to change your banged up lens using the GoPro Lens Replacement Kit! Follow along for some other tips and tricks to changing the lens.

Happy 2012 people, Im still in Oz enjoying the festivals and the pies with some good wind and blue skies. Spent NYE at Peats Ridge festival watching Goyte and some class Australian bands, if you like Dubstep and D and Bass have a look at "the Bird", a live act that got me bouncing around their whole set.
I had to share this video I found as it left me with so many questions about how and has inspired me to pester GoPro to lend me 30 cams to play with, so if anyone from GoPro reads this, which I very much doubt, send me a message. I promise to return them after use......

The rig used for this really interests me and the guys arms must of been hanging out as he held all of these but the result is unique and jaw dropping, can't wait to see more.........

Rip Curl and TimeSlice, partners in the overall development, used GoPro HD video cameras to freeze an infinite number of moments that could be viewed. The major benefit being a better way of catching all the performance surfing the Rip Curl team riders were doing, rather than just a fraction of it.

Combining our world class surf team of Mick Fanning, Owen Wright, Matt Wilkinson, Dillon Perillo and Dean Brady with the multi-frame array of cameras, gave us a Matrix style suite of "Mirage Moments", which pull the viewer in to the image, stalling there for long enough to enjoy a great move, before travelling down the line through the footage to the next Mirage Moment. The viewing metaphor for surfing in itself.
